Medical appointments: how to prepare and make the most of them

An appointment gives you time to explain what is happening, ask questions and agree on next steps with a healthcare professional.

General health information. It does not replace professional assessment.

Before your appointment

Write down the symptoms you want to discuss and when they started. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and allergies, as well as previous test results that may be relevant. Choose your most important questions so you can address them first.

During and after the visit

Describe your concerns in your own words. Ask why a test or medicine is being recommended and what follow-up you need. If an instruction is unclear, ask for another explanation and request written guidance.

Choose appropriate care

A visit may take place in person or remotely, depending on the concern and professional assessment. Confirm the format, cost and how you will receive results before booking. Online guidance cannot replace an examination when one is needed.
